Treasurer (Trustee)

This is a strategic, flexible role. While we do not expect you to do the day-to-day bookkeeping, we do want someone who is willing to get to know the charity’s operations, help strengthen our internal financial processes, and ensure we’re building sound foundations for growth.
We are currently looking to outsource the day to day bookkeeping, monthly management and annual accounts to a local accountancy firm. Payroll is currently outsourced. Therefore the Treasurer’s input is primarily at a governance and advisory level rather than day-to-day financial administration.
-Key Responsibilities:
The Treasurer provides strategic financial guidance to the Board of Trustees and supports the charity's mission through sound financial management. We also want someone who will challenge us and bring their different points of view. We are more interested in your passion and your potential than your previous experience as a treasurer or trustee.
-The Treasurer role will include:
• Advising the Board on financial strategy, risk management, and resource allocation.
• Advising the Board on the financial implications of MISS’s strategic plans and key assumptions in the operational plan and annual budget.
• Ensuring financial transparency; develop and monitor realistic budgets, cash flow and forecasts: maintain MISS Support’s financial sustainability,
• Ensuring annual accounts and other reporting requirements are prepared and submitted to the OSCR (Scottish Charity Regulator) on time.
• Oversee the financial activities of MISS and ensure they are legal, constitutional and comply with generally accepted accounting principles.
• Oversee MISS’s financial management, ensuring robust policies, procedures, processes and controls are in place.
• Liaising with the CEO, Chair and the Board of Trustees to develop their financial understanding, duties and responsibilities.
• Presenting financial data in an accessible and easy to understand format and providing advice and guidance to the Board on a range of financial matters, including risk.
• The Treasurer will be expected to attend Board meetings, which are held every 2 months and the Annual General Meeting. In addition to Board meetings. It is estimated that the Treasurer will need to be able to spend approximately 5 hours per month on MISS Support financial matters.
Key Skills and Experience:
• Financial expertise – a qualified accountant or senior-level financial management experience.
• Financial literacy and experience managing budgets, accounts, and financial
reporting – ideally within the charity or non-profit sector.
• Governance awareness – experience and understanding of charity finance,
accounting reporting requirements and regulatory requirements.
• Collaborative and team oriented.
• Able to present financial information clearly and accessibly to the Board, some of whom may not have financial backgrounds in making informed decisions about resources.
• Strategic mindset – the ability to translate financial insight into clear guidance that informs Board decision-making.
• A pragmatic, proactive approach and willingness to engage with the realities of small charity finance.
• Able to think creatively in a problem solving/strategic way.
• Sound, independent judgment and creativity, with willingness to make tough or unpopular recommendations.
Making a difference
Joining our Board offers the opportunity to play a central role in shaping the next chapter of MISS. You will be part of a committed team of trustees working together to ensure that our funding delivers meaningful, lasting impact across Scotland and beyond.
By supporting fellow Trustees in understanding financial matters, you will strengthen the Board's ability to oversee and guide MISS’s strategic direction to support our objectives.
This is a rewarding role where your financial skills will help ensure long-term sustainability and growth.
The role is flexible, and you'll be fully supported by the current Treasurer and Board of Trustees to get to grips with your role.
