Help Improve Homes, Build Skills and Strengthen Communities Across Glasgow’s East End

About Willowacre Trust
Willowacre Trust works alongside local communities to reduce inequality, tackle social isolation and provide practical support that helps people live safely, independently and well. Through community projects, environmental initiatives and practical household support services, Willowacre Trust helps strengthen neighbourhoods and improve quality of life across Glasgow and the West of Scotland.
The Handy Person team plays an important role in supporting tenants and local residents through small repairs, decorating, property preparation and community improvement work.
About the Role
This volunteer role supports the Handy Person team with practical tasks that help maintain homes, prepare properties for new tenants and improve community spaces. Volunteers work alongside experienced staff and gain valuable hands-on experience in basic maintenance, decorating and environmental improvement tasks.
What You’ll Be Doing
Tasks may include:
Assisting with painting and decorating in homes and community spaces
Helping prepare vacant properties for new tenants
Supporting with assembling or dismantling flat-pack furniture
Assisting with small household repairs and maintenance tasks
Helping install simple fittings such as curtain rails, blinds, shelves or bathroom accessories
Supporting basic joinery tasks and minor repairs to gates or fences
Helping tidy gardens and outdoor spaces, including litter picking, grass cutting and hedge trimming
Assisting with moving furniture or appliances where required
Helping maintain and clean tools and equipment
Supporting the Handy Person team with general practical tasks as required
The role offers a varied mix of indoor and outdoor practical work while helping local residents feel safer, more comfortable and more connected to their communities.

Interested in DIY, maintenance or community improvement work
Able to work well as part of a team
Willing to follow health & safety guidance
You do not need formal qualifications or trade experience — enthusiasm, reliability and a willingness to help are most important.
Training & Support
Volunteers will receive:
A full induction into the role and organisation
Ongoing support from experienced Handy Person staff
Guidance on safe working practices and use of equipment
Opportunities to build practical maintenance and decorating skills

Time Commitment
Flexible volunteering opportunities are available during weekdays, depending on projects and team activities.

What Happens After Applying?
After applying, a member of the Willowacre Trust team will contact you for an informal chat about the role, your interests and availability. Successful applicants may then be invited to attend an induction and meet the Handy Person team before starting their volunteering.
           

Experience required

Training and support will be provided, so previous experience is not essential.

Travel details

The role will take place at our community centre, in tenants’ homes and in vacant properties within the Calton Ward: Barrowfield, Bridgeton, Calton, Camlachie, Dalmarnock, Gallowgate, Glasgow Green, Parkhead, Reidvale.

Travel expenses

Reasonable out of pocket expenses will be provided.
